Brazil recorded a smaller-than-expected increase in consumer prices during the period covered by its mid-October inflation survey, according to figures released by national statistics agency IBGE on 23 October 2026.

The IPCA-15 consumer price index increased by 0.32%, compared with a 0.70% rise in the preceding monthly survey period.

Economists surveyed by Reuters had expected an increase of approximately 0.43%.

The result indicates that consumer prices continued rising, but at a slower monthly pace than analysts anticipated.

Annual inflation reached 4.62%, compared with 4.47% previously, while remaining below the 4.73% forecast.

The difference between monthly and annual movements is important: slower inflation over a short period does not necessarily imply that price pressures have disappeared over the preceding year. Food prices remain an important concern Food and beverage prices increased by 0.88%, contributing to the latest inflation reading.

Personal expenses rose by 0.55%, while housing-related prices declined by approximately 0.1%.

Food inflation is particularly significant because it directly affects household purchasing power, especially among families spending a substantial proportion of their income on essential goods.

Even when the overall inflation rate moderates, persistent increases in food prices can continue placing pressure on consumers.

The figures therefore present a mixed picture of improving headline price dynamics alongside continuing increases in important spending categories. Central bank faces a delicate decision Brazil's central bank operates with an inflation target of 3%, subject to a tolerance range of 1.5 percentage points on either side.

Its next monetary policy meeting is scheduled for 3–4 November.

Policymakers previously reduced the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points for the fifth consecutive meeting, bringing it to 13.75%.

The latest inflation figures may support arguments for further monetary easing, particularly if weaker economic activity reduces demand-driven price pressures.

However, monetary policy decisions also depend on inflation expectations, exchange-rate developments and broader financial conditions. Political uncertainty adds another dimension The inflation release comes ahead of a presidential runoff between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.

Investors will assess the candidates' economic proposals, particularly their implications for government expenditure, taxation and fiscal credibility.

Political uncertainty can influence currency markets and investment decisions, although election outcomes cannot be reliably predicted from inflation data alone.

For Brazil, the challenge is to establish sustainable price stability while preserving economic growth and investor confidence.

The latest figures offer some encouragement, but they do not eliminate the risks facing policymakers.
